Point four of our Mission Statement says HacDC will freely share its research and discoveries, using what is learned to teach others.
In general, our licensing policy guarantees this mission point as well as ensuring that HacDC remains compliant with the spirit and letter of the law for 501(c)(3) exempt non-profit organizations.
Our licensing policy is considered a part of our general promotion of collaboration.
DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO A HACDC PROJECT IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH OUR LICENSING POLICY
The web presence of HacDC, a District of Columbia Non-Profit Corporation, is an informational and collaborative space on the Internet. Our content is being provided freely, and no kind of agreement or contract is created between you and the owners or users of this site, the owners of the servers upon which it is housed, individual contributors to these pages, or project administrators, sysops or anyone else connected with this project subject to your claims against them directly. You are granted limited licenses in connection with your use of our web presence; it does not create or imply any contractual or extracontractual liability on the part of HacDC or any of its agents, members, organizers or other users.

All contributions, content, services, and products produced by HacDC (except for our wiki ) are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) by default.
For attribution purposes, we ask that you link back to the relevant content on hacdc.org and give credit to content creators, where applicable.
This is an excerpt of the license. Please visit this page for the full text:
You are free to:
- Share — copy and redistribute the material
- in any medium or format
- Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
- for any purpose, even commercially.
- The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
Under the following conditions:
- Attribution — You must give credit to HacDC (hacdc.org) and to individual content creators where applicable, provide a link to the license (this page), and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests that HacDC endorses you or your use.
- ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page.
Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder. Apart from the remix rights granted under this license, nothing in this license impairs or restricts the author's moral rights.
Because of the special nature of the content available on the HacDC Wiki, all contributions to it are considered to be released under the GNU Free Documentation License 1.3.
Part of the Preamble is quoted below:
The purpose of this License is to make a manual, textbook, or other functional and useful document "free" in the sense of freedom: to assure everyone the effective freedom to copy and redistribute it, with or without modifying it, either commercially or non-commercially. Secondarily, this License preserves for the author and publisher a way to get credit for their work, while not being considered responsible for modifications made by others. This License is a kind of copyleft, which means that derivative works of the document must themselves be free in the same sense. It complements the GNU General Public License, which is a copyleft license designed for free software.
